The original screenplay of Sugar Baby, written by Brian Stewart was set in New York City and was first optioned by John Heyman, (producer, Passage to India) in 1989. However, production did not commence. 20 years later, Brian made several changes to the original script to make it contemporary and changed the premise to a big city in India.

Sugar Baby is a story of three young street singers Maria, Sally and Tara whose luck changes when they are asked to take care of an orphan child.
